Bob Lane retired as a colorectal surgeon at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester in 2007 and is now actively involved in surgical education and training in sub-Saharan Africa.
For 18 years, on behalf of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland (ASGBI) and the International Federation of Surgical Colleges (IFSC) he has designed and organised a number of surgical training courses and lectured extensively in both West and East Africa. The demand is huge, not just for doctors in training but also for Non Physician Clinicians. He sits on a number of Committees, including Council of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa, which are all concerned with improving surgical training and healthcare in the developing world. He is frequently invited to speak at global surgery events and sits on a number of important Committees related to advancing surgical care in s-SA.
ASGBI has been awarded 4 UK Government grants by THET to undertake surgical education and training courses in both East and West Africa and so far these have been highly successful.
He is a Surgical Advisor to The Tropical Health & Education Trust (THET) and currently President of the International Federation of Surgical Colleges, Board member of the Global Alliance for Surgical, Obstetric, Trauma, and Anaesthesia Care (The G4 Alliance) which he co-founded, Director for International Development at the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI) and President of a Romanian stoma charity.
In the past he has been President of the Section of Coloproctology at the Royal Society of Medicine, President of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland and was the Rahima Dawood Travelling Fellow for the Association of Surgeons of East Africa in 2008.
